The gas chamber is a place where people are put to death. In the United States, it is a place where mistakes are made. In the gas chamber, there is no distinction made between those who have been sent there by mistake and those who have been sent there intentionally. The gas chamber is a place that many of us would rather not think about.

There are two ways of going to the gas chamber: Free and Not Free. The free way is where you receive a very public execution, a form of a show trial. You get to see your execution from the back of a prison van or from the top of a moving bus or from the top of a prison wall or from an open area in front of the prison.

In this case, you get to see your execution from above and can watch it all unfold in front of you. In the Not Free way, you are taken to an unmarked door somewhere in the secret location where all executions take place. You never see it coming and never know what’s in store for you. You go in blindfolded, handcuffed and with your knees tied together so that you cannot move at all.

You are too scared to know whether you will be executed by lethal injection, electrocution or hanging. No matter what happens, when it happens it will be completely unexpected and won’t lead up to anything that you could possibly expect or plan for.
